Saifee Hospital, Mumbai, has added the ExoMotus M4 lower limb exoskeleton to its rehabilitation services. The robotic gait trainer has been developed by Fourier Rehab and is aimed at supporting recovery for patients with neurological and orthopaedic mobility disorders.

The development comes amid a rise in cases of stroke, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, degenerative neurological disorders and orthopaedic surgeries, which has increased the need for rehabilitation. Traditional gait training therapy is limited by patient tolerance, safety concerns and therapist workload. Robotic gait trainers allow early mobilisation, repeated task-specific training, monitoring and consistent therapy delivery.

The ExoMotus M4 enables over-ground walking and provides an alternative to treadmill-based systems. It includes a balance support frame to enable gait training in patients with limited voluntary control of lower limbs. The system allows adjustment of parameters including walking speed, step length, step height, guidance force and body weight support. It also includes vertical degrees of freedom to support weight transfer and step elevation during rehabilitation.

The system can be used for patients with stroke, incomplete spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, Parkinson’s disease and for gait re-education after orthopaedic surgery. It includes training options such as sit-to-stand and rhythmic gait training for sensory stimulation, cardiopulmonary conditioning and prevention of muscle atrophy. The device is designed for use in tertiary care hospitals and includes features such as battery support, automatic leg length matching and a seating system for patient transfer.

Dr Hardik Ajmera, Medical Director, Saifee Hospital, said; “Today, rehabilitation needs to be early, intensive, and measurable. With the rising complexity of neurological and orthopedic cases, there is a need to incorporate cutting-edge technology that assists both patients and healthcare professionals. The ExoMotus M4 enables us to provide safe, personalized, and data-driven gait training while minimizing physical effort for therapists. This is in line with Saifee Hospital’s focus on providing world-class, future-ready patient care.”

The addition of the ExoMotus M4 forms part of Saifee Hospital’s efforts to incorporate medical technology to support functional recovery, patient safety and rehabilitation services.
