Tetsuya Yamada, Managing Director, Omron Healthcare stresses that the way we access healthcare has improved, and new possibilities have emerged to enhance patient-provider communication

The National Centre for Biotechnology Information defines the patient-provider relationship as a consensual bond where the patient knowingly seeks the assistance of a physician, and the physician willingly accepts the individual as their patient. It primarily relies on fostering mutual trust and effective communication. As the way we interact with the world evolves, so does the flow of patient-provider communication. It is crucial to adapt to these changes and embrace innovative, effective solutions. Failing to bridge the gaps between patients and providers can lead to unforeseen consequences.

In a rapidly changing world that is moving faster than light, the tenets of patient-provider communication have also changed. The pandemic has altered the whole face of patient-provider communication – think all the telehealth services. The way we access healthcare has improved, and new possibilities have emerged to enhance patient-provider communication.

However, all these services are availed after symptoms start manifesting. Now, the time has come to find ways to keep patients and providers connected 24X7 so that the service providers can remain a step ahead of the symptoms and can intervene before the tragedy strikes. Over the last two-three years, we have had a spate of deaths, where seemingly fit people succumbed to cardiac episodes. As per a WHO report in 2021, India accounts for about one-fifth of the 17.9 million deaths caused by heart attacks globally. Over 50 per cent of heart attacks occur among people below the age of 50. Hence, this is not a geriatric issue but a matter that concerns all of us and most importantly, a matter that concerns the future of the country. According to a study conducted by AIIMs in 2023, only 10 per cent of patients who suffer from cardiac arrest reach the hospital within an hour. Over 55 per cent of patients who suffer from a cardiovascular emergency fail to recognise it and therefore, fail to get the help they need. By fostering a culture of awareness and proactive care, we can significantly reduce the occurrence of such events and pave the way for a healthier future.

To create a more hopeful future, home health monitoring systems emerge as a promising solution. They empower patients to take an active role in their own well-being by providing tools for continuous monitoring at home. Through early intervention and preventive care, these systems can save lives and lead to better outcomes for patients.

Embracing home health monitoring not only ensures patient safety but also enhances efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the healthcare system. By reducing the need for frequent hospital visits, we can optimise the use of healthcare resources and make healthcare more sustainable for everyone.

Home health monitoring systems emerge as an effective means of bridging the gaps between patients and providers, thereby ensuring patient safety. Home health monitoring systems provide patients with the necessary tools and agency to actively participate in their treatment process.

  • Continuous monitoring: Home health monitors reduce the need to physically visit the hospital for follow-up and monitoring. Patients can monitor their vitals at home and manage their well-being and keep their doctors informed in real-time.

  • Early intervention and preventive care: Home health monitors create a culture of awareness and well-being. Patients will not have to wait for a stroke to be diagnosed with a cardiovascular condition if they have the means to regularly monitor their Blood Pressure and other vitals at home which are then studied and utilised by their doctors for better and timely decision-making.

  • Improved efficiency and cost-effectiveness: By minimising the need for in-person visits and hospital readmissions, remote monitoring optimizes healthcare resource utilisation. Patients can receive ongoing care in the comfort of their homes, reducing the strain on hospital facilities and healthcare professionals.

  • Good quality devices: Utilising high-quality devices for blood pressure measurement ensures accurate and reliable readings, crucial for effective medical diagnoses and monitoring, promoting proactive health management and reducing the risk of misinterpretation or erroneous results.

Home health monitoring addresses the limitations of patient-provider communication by offering continuous and remote monitoring of patients’ health conditions, allowing for timely interventions and proactive care management. In conclusion, let us remain hopeful and open-minded about the possibilities that the changing world offers us. With the power of innovative solutions like home health monitoring and telehealth, we can strengthen the patient-provider relationship and work together toward a healthier and brighter future for all.
