In cardiology, a lot of times, we have just five minutes to diagnose a heart attack, just five minutes that changes someone’s life for always, just five minutes to reassure family and just five minutes that we always remember.

One such incident that happened was on an ordinary day in the emergency department. A middle-aged man walked in complaining of what he thought was “just acidity.” But by looking at him, it gave me a feeling that something is wrong.

His symptoms were subtle: a slight heaviness in the chest, sweating that he blamed on the weather, and discomfort radiating to his jaw. Within minutes, the ECG confirmed what my instincts had suspected: he was having a major heart attack.

The next five minutes were a race against time.

Our team activated the emergency cardiac protocol, administered life-saving medications, and rushed him for an emergency angioplasty.

Every second mattered because, in cardiology, we often say, “Time is muscle.” The longer a blocked artery remains closed, the more heart muscle is permanently damaged. He survived.

A few days later, he walked into my clinic with his young daughter. She hugged him tightly and said, “Thank you for saving my Dad.” That simple moment changed the way I viewed my profession.

Years later, I still remember those five minutes. They reminded me that medicine is not only about knowledge and technology it is about listening carefully, trusting clinical judgment, and acting decisively when every moment counts.

Sometimes, the most important decision a doctor makes takes only five minutes. But its impact can last a lifetime.
