French embryologists, Dr Jean Louis and Dr Philippe Clairaz demonstrated a new technology called High Security Vitrification system for making IVF test tube babies process easier, at Hotel Clarks Inn, South Delhi.

This technology is apparently must in Europe if the clinic wants a CE certification and is used by most clinics there. In the High Security Vitrification system the ends of the straw in which the embryo is placed are sealed and closed so that liquid nitrogen doesn’t come in direct contact with the embryos. This will reportedly increase the cost of the procedure and depending on case-to-case basis cost could be Rs 10,000 more per patient. The system is the first in New Delhi, launched in collaboration with ISIS IVF Hospital, Kailash Colony.

Dr Shivani Sachdev Gour, Director Isis Hospital who organised the workshop attended by approximately 35 doctors and embryologists from Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and UP said that the safety of the new technique of freezing eggs and embryos is reassuring for patients. When compared with current conventional techniques but risk of damage to precious gametes and also the risk of infection in this high security system is next to nil.

Dr Louis said that another advantage is that the shelf life is approximately eight weeks. Dr Clairaz mentioned that they are the only patent holders of the new technique, and in France almost 85 per cent of IVF centres have now shifted to this new technique.

Similar workshops are also being conducted over India in Ahmedabad and Chennai
