Atantra Das Gupta, Director, Head-Health & Medical Equipments (CE), Samsung India, informs about Samsung’s healthcare business which focuses on meaningful customer-centric innovation and elaborates on how they will lead the digital radiography segment by end of 2018

Under your leadership, what kind of transformation would you like to see in Samsung India Healthcare business? Why do you think healthcare domain is important for Samsung India?

Samsung has been bringing in meaningful customer-centric innovation in the healthcare segment. The brand is driven to bring innovations that cater to the specific needs of the consumers, in the form of products backed by best-in-class technologies. For example, in ultrasound space currently, Samsung is the only player in the 5D ultrasound space. Samsung 5D which was started in 2014 helpsto diagnose the foetal abnormality at an early stage. Samsung’s 5D Heart Color is a foetal echocardiography technology designed for precise diagnosis of congenital heart disease. The 5D gives more evidence-based outcome in foetal anomalies. Early detection is very critical for the safety of mother and child. Samsung 5D helps to diagnose the foetal abnormality at an early stage with accurate results, that too in very short span of time. In simple terms, 5D technology is a form of automation where you go through and do a scan and you get the results auto populated for your consumption. Samsung’s ultrasound business is the fastest growing business in the healthcare sector, with a pace that is 3.5 times than that of the industry. It is the safest modality available. We charge very nominal rates. Samsung’s technological advancement in ultrasound is providing a significant clinical value. It is enhancing the efficiency. We will be a game changer in this space.

How do you plan to boost healthcare in the country by using innovative technology?

The digital healthcare ecosystem today is the new normal. In healthcare many advanced and disruptive technologies are making inroads and it is bringing about tremendous change in the affordable and quality healthcare landscape. From Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud, Internet of Things (IoT) to telemedicine and virtual reality (VR), healthcare technologies are opening up new gateways in order to keep people healthier, ease out clinical communication and improve the quality and efficiency of healthcare. Equipment and appliances are also getting smarter. We in Samsung will be focussing on leading the IoT deployment this year. We are deploying AI into the equipment. S-Detector has the highest conversion efficiency called DQE by using the most efficient CSi Scintillators and Thin Film Transistor (TFT’s) in the industry and enhanced battery life for doing more number of X-rays without any effect on the throughput.

How do you see the Digital Radiography (DR) market segment? What innovations have been made in the area of digital radiography?

The DR market is in a very nascent stage. The Indian market is flooded with a lot computerised radiography solutions. We are trying to decrease the dose considering the well-being of the patients, doctors and most importantly technicians who are exposed to radiation everyday. For example, the USFDA has certified the Samsung’s GC85A, a digital X-ray imaging system modality solutions. The DR solutions by Samsung increases throughput by almost 50 per cent and dose to the patient is reduced by more than 50 per cent compared to any CR modality.

X-ray is by and large used by the economically backward people for screening tuberculosis, silicosis. Keeping this in mind, Samsung has launched a software Bone Subtraction Imaging (BSI) with only single exposure thereby reducing the dose considerably.

Other latest and advanced features we have are S-Align (Angle correction of tube with regard to the angle of the detector), SimGrid for removing scattered radiation, Tube and Line Enhancement (TLE) for bedside radiography for clear identification of the tube and lines inserted in the body, paediatric dose management by weight.

Samsung’s Wireless Flat panel (S-Detector) can be shared across all Samsung DR Models, which helps to boost the efficiency and also save cost on additional detectors to the end user. The S-Detector has the highest conversion efficiency called DQE by using the most efficient CSi Scintillators and TFT’s in the industry and enhanced battery life for doing more number of X-rays without any effect on the throughput.

Overall, Samsung has installed more than 100 DR systems all over India and leads the market in battery operated mobile DR segment. It is, also, one of the fastest growing businesses in this segment of healthcare, with a pace that is four times than that of the industry and is well prepared to become number one in DR business by the end of 2018.

How is Samsung different form other market players?

I would like to emphasise that our imaging solutions are versatile and many healthcare providers are finding them innovative. For example, the GM85, the mobile radiography solution has changed the way bedside X-rays are done. The product is one of the flagship products of Samsung and a next-gen solution in mobile radiography. It also has the highest installation base in India with more than 60 per cent of the market share in battery operated mobile DR category. The solution has a visual indication to check the exposure status and audible alarm signal for the purpose when the unit is on drive along, collision sensors and emergency stop button.
