Fortis Hospitals, Cunningham Road in association with Bengaluru police organised a health drive to spread awareness about Hepatitis. As a part of this drive, Fortis Hospital provided three Hepatitis vaccination shots to 100 policemen at the Police Commissioner’s office, Bengaluru.

Viral Hepatitis has affected around 52 million people in the country and is stated as a serious public health problem in India by WHO. Considering the alarming number and the effect it has on a person’s health, the government is focusing on managing viral hepatitis, under the National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme. The hospital aims to provide its support, encourage and expand the coverage of adult hepatitis vaccination in India.

Dr Sreenivasa D, Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist, Fortis Hospitals, Cunningham Road, said, “Hepatitis is known to be a silent killer. Hepatitis B, for instance is highly contagious. Even a minimal amount of blood is known to transmit this infection. Despite high prevalence, in India, the awareness regarding Hepatitis vaccination is very low, which is why the penetration of vaccine among them is taking a longer duration. Focused efforts have to be made to prevent the spread, and at Fortis Hospitals, we try and provide our best to community. Through this drive, we want to educate people on prevalence and prevention of the disease so that they can stay healthy.”

Commissioner of Police, T Suneel Kumar, IPS said, “We are glad to associate with Fortis to spread awareness about this disease and also make citizens aware of the importance of hepatitis vaccination. The Bengaluru police department completely supports this drive for the betterment of the society.”
