IMA releases guidelines as swine flu cases rise in Maharashtra

More than 103 people died due to swine flu across the state

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) is concerned about rising cases of deaths due to swine flu in Pune, Nasik and Aurangabad. More than 103 people died due to a spurt in swine flu cases. All three IMA branches are requested to educate its members regarding the swine flu guidelines and report every case of suspected or confirmed flu to the local authorities.

IMA has sent the following advisories to its members:

  • Fever with cough and nasal symptoms unless proved otherwise is swine flu
  • All cases of suspected or confirmed flu should be given anti-virals, as per the protocol.
  • All should stay away (atleast 3 mts) from a flu patient while coughing and sneezing.
  • One should not cough in hands amd use disposable paper.
  • Patients with flu should wear surgical masks.
  • Doctors should handle flu patients using N-95 mask and admitted patients with personal protection clothing/equipment.
  • All hospitals and clinics should have enough surgical masks to be given at reception to every patient of cough with fever.
  • Healthcare providers should be vaccinated.
  • All high risk patients, heart and diabetes patients should take flu vaccination.
  • People travelling to Pune, Nasik and Aurangabad should consult their doctors regarding precautions and treatment advice.
