Cancer care is undergoing significant change as the healthcare sector integrates patient-centric approaches, advanced diagnostics, and precision therapies. In India, cancer cases have risen steadily over the past decade. According to a recent report by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the incidence of cancer in India increased by 36 per cent between 2012 and 2022, from 1.01 million to 1.38 million cases. During the same period, cancer-related deaths rose by 30.3 per cent. India currently ranks third globally in total cancer cases and second in cancer-related deaths, with a rate of 121 cases per 100,000 people.

While cancers such as breast, lung, and colorectal remain common, oncologists are increasingly diagnosing cancers that are harder to detect, including pancreatic and liver cancers. Older populations are more likely to be affected, with challenges such as treatment resistance and the need for long-term supportive care continuing to affect treatment outcomes. Today’s therapies involve immunotherapy, targeted treatments, and artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted diagnostics, offering new methods for personalised patient care.

In response to these developments, Sahyadri Hospitals has launched a cancer patient support group named Beaming Hope to expand its oncology care services across Maharashtra. The initiative is intended to enhance patient care by addressing the emotional, psychological, and practical aspects of cancer treatment.

Dr Sunil Rao, Chief Operating Officer and Medical Director, Sahyadri Group of Hospitals, said, “Cancer care is no longer just about survival, but about ensuring a better quality of life throughout and after treatment. With the launch of ‘Beaming Hope’, we are addressing the emotional, mental, and physical aspects of cancer treatment. By offering a robust support system, we can help patients not only survive but thrive during their cancer journey. Our holistic approach ensures that patients have the emotional and social support they need at every stage.”

The group is structured to bring together patients, survivors, caregivers, and clinicians, creating a shared space for lived experiences and mutual support. Dr Vinod Gore, Surgical Oncologist at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Deccan Gymkhana, noted, “The cancer journey is filled with emotional and mental challenges. ‘Beaming Hope’ creates a space where patients can share their fears and triumphs, providing them with the confidence to face each day. By addressing these aspects, the initiative ensures that patients and their caregivers are fully supported throughout the treatment process. It is not just about treating the disease but also providing a supportive environment where no one feels alone.”

In addition to the support group, Sahyadri Hospitals has introduced the Varian TrueBeam system at its Deccan Gymkhana facility. This technology enables radiotherapy with higher precision and reduced treatment times, especially in cases where tumours move with patient respiration.

Dr Tushar Patil, Medical Oncologist at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, said, “The Varian TrueBeam system marks a major advancement in how we deliver radiotherapy. With its ability to track tumors that move during breathing, such as those in the lungs or abdomen, TrueBeam ensures that we can target tumors with greater accuracy, reducing treatment time and patient discomfort.”

According to Dr Jagadish Shejul, Radiation Oncologist at the same facility, over 25 patients have received treatment using the TrueBeam system. He said, “By combining the support of the Beaming Hope group and advanced treatment with the Varian TrueBeam system, we have successfully treated more than 25 patients so far. TrueBeam allows us to target tumors with sub-millimeter level precision, which is especially critical when tumors are located near sensitive areas of the brain.”

Dr Shejul also cited a case involving a 75-year-old retired military officer with a benign brain tumour located near the brain’s motor control centre. The case was managed with surface-guided imaging and HyperArc radiotherapy. The non-invasive method provided a targeted approach while avoiding complications such as paralysis. He explained that the technique eliminated the need for surgical incisions and reduced treatment impact on healthy tissues.

With the implementation of Beaming Hope and the Varian TrueBeam system, Sahyadri Hospitals is expanding its oncology services to integrate both medical technology and holistic patient support, reinforcing its positioning within India’s evolving cancer care ecosystem.
