Sahyadri Hospitals simultaneously conducts kidney, pancreas and liver transplant

The hospital conducted the 50th liver transplant

A team of doctors at Sahyadri Hospitals recently conducted kidney and pancreas transplant and liver transplant simultaneously on different patients at Sahyadri Speciality Hospital Deccan Gymkhana, Pune. For the first time in Western India, a single centre has performed kidney and pancreas transplant and liver transplant simultaneously on different patients. This was the second kidney and pancreas transplant conducted in the state of Maharashtra and also marked the 50th liver transplant by Sahyadri Hospitals.

After a 41-year-old accident victim was declared brain dead, the ZTCC Pune gave the necessary permissions to harvest his organs which saved lives of three patients. The victim’s kidney and pancreas were transplanted to a 27-year-old IT professional from Chennai who was suffering from renal failure and severe diabetes which had damaged his kidney. The liver was transplanted to a 62-year-old patient from Baramati who was suffering from chronic liver disease. Both these transplant surgeries began at 8 am at Sahyadri Speciality Hospital Deccan Gymkhana, Pune and were completed by 5 pm.

The transplant surgeries were performed with the help of various speciality doctors including multi-organ transplant surgeons — Dr Bipin Vibhute, Dr Anil Vaidya, Dr Dinesh Zirpe, Dr Sharan Narute and Dr Abhijeet Mane; Transplant anaesthetists, Dr Manish Phatak and Dr Dinesh Babu, Nephrologist, Dr Sachin Patil, Hepatologist, Gastroenterologist – Dr Sandeep Kulkarni. Transplant coordinators Arun Ashokan and Rahul Tambe and medical social worker Sharmila Padhye were also part of this team.
