Mondelez India supports 200 health & wellness centres to strengthen primary healthcare
Initiative aligns with Ayushman Arogya Mandir, improving medical services across four states
Mondelez India, through its Shubh Aarambh corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, has supported 200 Health & Wellness Centres (HWCs) across Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. This initiative has expanded healthcare services to over 800 villages, reaching more than 1.45 million people with improved access to primary healthcare.
The program has focused on maternal and child health, management of non-communicable diseases, and community participation in healthcare. In alignment with the Government of India’s Ayushman Arogya Mandir (AAM) initiative, Mondelez India has presented an impact report to government authorities, outlining key insights from managing these HWCs.
According to the report, the initiative has led to a 58 per cent increase in patient footfall, with 11,618 high-risk pregnancies identified and referred for specialised care. Additionally, over 7,800 children under five were referred for advanced treatment, and 160 Jan Arogya Samitis were equipped with tools for community-driven healthcare monitoring.
The program has strengthened healthcare services at these centres:
- 96 per cent of Sub-Health Centres (SHCs) provide antenatal care
- 84 per cent of HWCs offer postnatal care
- 97 per cent ensure routine immunisation
- 87 per cent cater to adolescent health services needs
- 12 per cent increase in pregnancy registrations
- 12 HWCs received Kayakalp accreditation for hygiene and infection control
- 10 HWCs earned NQAS certification for meeting national quality standards
- 1,028 healthcare workers were trained to enhance maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH) services
The initiative has also contributed to a 21 per cent reduction in out-of-pocket medical expenses, improving affordability for local communities.
Ophira Bhatia, VP, CGA Lead (India & AMEA), Mondelez India, stated, “For over a decade, we have been focused on strengthening communities and improving livelihoods. As part of this commitment, we identified healthcare as a key area—ensuring quality medical services. We worked closely with local health authorities to improve accessibility, affordability, and service quality at the grassroots level by strengthening the government-led Health & Wellness Centre (HWCs) ecosystem. We have been able to cover over 800 villages effectively. The insights from this initiative will serve as a model for expanding primary healthcare services nationwide and highlighting the importance of preventive and community-led healthcare solutions.”
Beyond infrastructure and service improvements, the program has trained over 800 healthcare staff to integrate gender and social considerations into healthcare services. Additional interventions include:
- Iron Sucrose Intravenous administration for anaemia management
- Support for high-risk pregnancies
- Health communication materials to improve awareness
In alignment with Viksit Bharat, Mondelez India hosted a Knowledge Exchange Workshop with key stakeholders to discuss best practices and strategies for scaling primary healthcare services. The discussions highlighted the role of HWCs in improving healthcare inclusivity and accessibility, reinforcing the need for continued investments in such initiatives.
