Dr D.Y. Patil Medical College Hospital and Research Centre Pune strengthens healthcare infrastructure in Pune

Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune, inaugurated three centres at its premises — the ‘Yashraj Prasad Patil’ Multi-Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence, the ‘Bhagyashree’ Aai & Gokul, Mother & Child Centre and the IVF & Endoscopy Center in the presence of Sunetratai Ajit Pawar, Deputy Chief Minister, Government of Maharashtra and Guardian Minister, Pune, and Prakash Abitkar, Minister of Public Health and Family Welfare, Government of Maharashtra.

The three new centres are envisioned to further enhance DPU’s capabilities in organ transplantation, maternal and child healthcare, reproductive medicine and advanced endoscopy.

The ‘Yashraj Prasad Patil’ Multi-Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence builds on DPU’s established expertise in complex transplantation, with more than 550 organ transplants performed across heart, lung, kidney, pancreas, cornea and liver transplantation. Designed to bring global best practices in transplant medicine closer to patients, the Centre features world class medical technology, specialised equipment, advanced infection-control systems and a purpose-built, controlled clinical environment with dedicated air-handling systems—an important safeguard for patients awaiting transplantation and those recovering after surgery.

The Centre brings together specialised multidisciplinary teams focused on patients with end-stage heart and lung disease, severe respiratory infections and other complex conditions requiring advanced transplant and critical care. With more than 50 heart and lung transplants performed in the last three years, DPU has emerged as a mature centre for advanced cardiopulmonary transplant care in Western Maharashtra. The new Centre of Excellence will further expand these capabilities while providing medical students and postgraduate trainees exposure to advanced transplant technology, specialised procedures and globally aligned clinical practices.

The ‘Bhagyashree’ Aai & Gokul, Mother & Child Centre has been envisioned as a dedicated centre for comprehensive maternal and child healthcare. With specialised facilities for mothers, newborns and children, the centre will bring together multidisciplinary expertise and advanced medical infrastructure to support women and children through different stages of care.

The IVF & Endoscopy Center will offer advanced reproductive medicine and endoscopic services, supported by modern infrastructure and specialised clinical expertise. The center is aimed at providing patients with access to contemporary fertility and endoscopy care in a technologically advanced and patient-centric environment.

Commenting on the inauguration, Dr P. D. Patil, Chancellor, Dr D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pimpri, Pune said, “The inauguration of these three centres is an important milestone in our continuing journey towards building an institution that combines advanced medical technology with compassionate and accessible healthcare. Our vision has always been to create infrastructure and clinical capabilities that can address varied  healthcare needs under one roof. These centres are a reflection of that commitment and will further strengthen DPU’s contribution to specialised healthcare in Maharashtra and beyond.”

Deputy Chief Minister Sunetratai Ajit Pawar said, “I feel truly honoured and delighted to be here today. We all know the vision of Dr. D.Y. Patil and the immense contribution of Dr. P. D. Patil to education, healthcare and society. Over the years, thousands of students have passed through these institutions and lakhs of people have benefited from the healthcare services. Health is the most important aspect of every person’s life, and therefore, providing healthcare is not merely a facility but a great responsibility.”

The Aai and Gokul Paediatric Hospital reflects my belief that the health of mothers and children is fundamental to the health of society. With paediatric and newborn care, advanced technology and the Yashoda Milk Bank, the centre not only provides treatment but gives hope to entire families, particularly working mothers. The IVF and Endoscopy Center is another important step towards preparing for the healthcare needs of the future, with technology and specialised expertise coming together to provide comprehensive care. The Yashraj Prasad Patil Multi-Organ Transplant Centre of Excellence is equally significant, demonstrating DPU’s growing capabilities in challenging transplantation. With more than 550 transplants already performed, this is a remarkable achievement.

Behind all these facilities is a dedicated team and a strong commitment to making advanced healthcare accessible and affordable. The various government health schemes have helped make treatment more accessible to economically weaker sections, and DPU’s efforts to support patients in availing these benefits are commendable.

Speaking on the occasion, Prakash Abitkar, Minister of Public Health and Family Welfare, Government of Maharashtra, said, “Healthcare today is not only about having advanced technology; it is about ensuring that these services are accessible to the people who need them. The inauguration of these three centres at DPU addresses some of the important and emerging healthcare needs of Maharashtra. These centres bring specialised care under one roof, reducing the need for patients to travel between different hospitals for critical treatments. I had the opportunity to visit these facilities, and I am pleased to see the advanced infrastructure and comprehensive services being developed here. The D.Y. Patil’s name has earned immense respect through its contribution to education, healthcare and service to society. Today, people recognise the institution not merely by its name, but by the work and service it has consistently delivered to the state and the nation. As Minister of Public Health, my priority is that every citizen should have access to good-quality healthcare. We also recognise that many families cannot afford advanced medical treatment. Initiatives such as the corpus fund at D.Y. Patil, through which financial assistance can support patients requiring treatment, are therefore extremely important. State-of-the-art healthcare must go hand in hand with compassion and affordability.
