Nanavati Max Hospital launches Institute for Advanced Orthopaedics, Spine and Joint Care in Mumbai
The institute integrates surgical specialities, 3D printing, robotics, and rehabilitation for adult and paediatric musculoskeletal care
Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital has launched the Institute of Advanced Orthopaedics, Spine & Joint Care, bringing together a multidisciplinary team with a combined experience of over 200 years and a record of more than 40,000 surgeries. The institute aims to deliver comprehensive care for both adult and paediatric musculoskeletal conditions.
The institute was inaugurated in the presence of Mr Paresh Rawal, Indian actor and former Member of the Lok Sabha, Mr Mohammad Azharuddin, former captain of the Indian national cricket team and former Member of the Lok Sabha, and Dr Vivek Talaulikar, Director and Chief Operating Officer, Western Region, Max Healthcare.
The institute includes orthopaedic surgeons, spine specialists, musculoskeletal oncologists, sports medicine experts, physiotherapists, and trauma consultants. Its offerings span diagnostics, robotic surgeries, post-operative care, and physiotherapy. According to the hospital, it is equipped to provide quaternary-level treatment under one roof.
Prof. (Dr) Pradeep B Bhosale, Senior Director – Robotic Joint Replacement, Hip and Knee Surgery at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, said, “The Institute combines cutting-edge robotics, minimally invasive techniques, and advanced physiotherapy to help patients regain mobility faster, with fewer complications. We aim to create a Centre of Excellence for all kinds of musculoskeletal disorders for patients in India and abroad.”
The institute includes one of Maharashtra’s first in-hospital 3D-printing laboratories. These facilities enable conversion of CT scan data into bone models and surgical guides. These guides are designed to improve surgical precision in tumour removal and bone reconstruction procedures.
Integrated services such as 24×7 imaging, laboratory diagnostics, and a dedicated blood bank are also available within the hospital to support the institute. Robotics-guided navigation systems support surgical accuracy, while a specialised physiotherapy unit delivers rehabilitation through gait training and individualised protocols.
Dr Mihir Bapat, Senior Director – Orthopaedics & Spinal Surgery at Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, said, “Beyond the operating theatre, we also connect with the community, creating awareness about posture, ergonomics, and sports injury prevention. We are official medical partners of renowned sports clubs and teams, where our sports medicine specialists and physiotherapists guide and manage sports-related injuries during a professional game. Our multidisciplinary team doesn’t just aim to fix bones, but offer mobility and quality of life to the community in general.”
The institute’s core services include trauma and reconstructive surgery, adult and paediatric orthopaedics, robotic-assisted joint replacements, and spine surgeries. The joint replacement unit is recognised by the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences and performs primary, revision, and unicondylar procedures. Spine surgery offerings include Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS) and treatment for spinal deformities.
Its Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine division focuses on upper limb, shoulder, elbow, and hand surgeries. The orthopaedic oncology department undertakes limb-salvage and bone-tumour surgeries. A dedicated intensive care unit (ICU), staffed with ATLS- and ACLS-certified physicians, provides post-surgical monitoring. The institute also runs integrated pain-management and rehabilitation programmes led by senior physiotherapists.
